Starting out Required Determination and Long Hours After moving six times to accommodate Brian’s job at 3M, the Smillies settled in Afton, MN. Jackie decided to begin a career in real estate after watching the many REALTORS they had used over the years. Since the Smillies were new to the area, Jackie didn’t have anyone to help provide referral business. Becoming successful in the business required sheer determination and long hours. |

A Winning Team That was 22 years ago. Since then, Jackie has built a highly successful real estate business with Edina Realty and was joined by her husband Brian, who took early retirement from 3M in 1997. During the first year the couple worked together, sales more than doubled Jackie’s previous best year. The Smillies work as a team, but each has their own clients and areas of expertise: Brian most often works with buyers and Jackie with Sellers. The Smillies found that working together has brought renewed and refreshed enthusiasm to their business and strengthened their personal relationship as well. |

Meeting Client’s Needs in Location and Price Range
Jackie’s work in real estate has focused on the St. Croix Valley, Lake Elmo and Woodbury while Brian holds real estate licenses in Minnesota and Wisconsin. Although the Smillies focus on the East Metro area, they are always flexible and do what it takes to meet the needs of their clients.
Even though the Smillies are members of Edina Realty’s Exceptional Properties division and sell upper-bracket homes, the couple feels it’s important to work all price points with a variety of buyers and sellers. First-time buyer or transferee that has made numerous moves; the fun is in the excitement of finding the right home for that buyer.
The Personal Touch
The couple has opted not to hire assistants or sales representatives in order to ensure that their clients receive the most personal service possible. They strongly believe that building relationships is key to their success. In addition to managing the details of their clients’ real estate transactions, they try to make this experience as light and enjoyable as possible.

On a Personal Note
Jackie and Brian have been married since 1968. They have a daughter, Jennifer, and a son, Steve. Jennifer lives in Dallas, Texas with her husband, Ian, and three year old son, Christopher. She is a corporate pilot for HP. Steve and his wife, Erin, live in the Highland area of St Paul. They had twins on Christmas day 2007. Steve has been an agent with Edina Realty since 2001.
